Max Book, born 1953, Swedish artist.
Book first attracted attention in the 1980’s for his dark, expressive and monumental paintings. He has long been considered one of the most acclaimed and accomplished painters of his generation in Sweden. As a painter, Book has developed a unique and experimental visual language mixing paint, pasted collage, graffiti influences, strange characters and contradictory objects within his work.

MAX BOOK – “BeHillys vägg av trög flod”
15 June – 31 July 2024
Redsheep Gallery is proud to present “BeHillys vägg av trög flod” a solo exhibition by Max Book which will be shown in the summer of 2024 at Klockestrand Skolhus.
The artist, who was born in 1953 in Österforse and grew up in Bollstabruk, broke through in 1980 after his first solo exhibition at Galleri Engström in Stockholm. In the mid-80s, the real breakthrough came through a large number of notable exhibitions and successes in the gallery and museum world, nationally and internationally, and Max Book was hailed as one of the foremost painters of postmodernism.
The exhibition “BeHillys vägg av trög flod” is specially designed for the gallery. The title of this extensive exhibition is also the name of the monumental work, which is displayed in the main hall. A greeting to Carl Fredrik Hill, the Ångermanälven and the artist’s upbringing in a working-class society. Deep-rooted art historical references, childhood memories, advanced acrylic-based mixed technique and collage in the form of computer-processed photomontage collide in an expressive painting. A dramaturgy that flirts with the absurd. Staged people, creatures, objects and animals, usually in a magnificent natural environment, a sublime light, with elements of humor, bordering on satire. An enigmatic naming of the works completes this mysterious atmosphere, as a signature of Max Book.
Since 2010, the old Masugnen in Bollstabruk, Max Book’s large-scale works have not been shown in the artist’s home region. It is a favour, joy and a fascinating experience to have the opportunity to present Max Book here at Klockestrand Skolhus in Kramfors municipality and to end our work as gallerists in the old schoolhouse with this exhibition. An exhibition in line with Redsheep Gallery’s hallmark and aspiration to show contemporary art of an international level far from the hunting grounds of big city galleries.
